{UAH} BBC News: English explodes in India

I saw this story on the BBC News iPhone App and thought you should see it:

English explodes in India

The word "Hinglish" doesn't capture what's happening to English in India - people aren't just mixing words, they are energetically reinventing them.

Obama's foundation has nixed a proposal from a Kenyan university to house Obama's presidential library.

The Nairobi-based U.S. International University-Africa submitted a proposal in June to the Barack Obama Foundation for consideration as the site for the Obama library and museum.

The school said the Africa site would shed light on Obama's heritage and would also help boost the "Obama tourism circuit."

But the "submission was not responsive to the guidelines and is not under consideration," the foundation told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Kenyan proposal was among the 13 submissions received by the Barack Obama Foundation for the library site by the June 17 deadline.

The University of Chicago, Chicago State University and Columbia University were among the schools that confirmed they submitted proposals.

"We appreciate the time, effort, and planning that have gone into the 13 responses. ... These ideas will ultimately help us build a library that reflects President Obama's priorities and values," Martin (Marty) Nesbitt, chair of the Barack Obama Foundation, said in a statement on June 17.

"We will run a level and fair process to evaluate how well each response captures the vision and goals of the future Obama presidential library, and based on what we see, the foundation will identify a short-list of potential partners to receive a request for proposal later this summer," the statement said.

{UAH} Discussing Trade and Investments at the UNAA Convention

Discussing Trade and Investments at the UNAA Convention

Over the past few years, the Government of Uganda has placed ever-increasing emphasis on the attraction of capital investments from Ugandans in the Diaspora.

In the lead up to Uganda's Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) was tasked with the conduct of appropriate research and analysis to create a document that would be made available to all and any Ugandans in the Diaspora interested in investing back home.  With collaborative assistance from various Uganda Ministries (Foreign Affairs, Tourism and Trade, Agriculture, and others), Bank of Uganda and UNDP, UIA created and published the "Compendium of Diaspora Investment and Business Opportunities."

As described by the UIA;

These business ideas have been developed to give you a definite direction and focus on various investment opportunities. A brief overview of the business climate in Uganda is provided with profiles of 17 sectors and a summary of market conditions, key demand drivers, a snapshot of investment opportunities as well as over 200 business ideas. Each Chapter, in this publication attempts to give information on specific aspects of investment in Uganda and provides a starting point for prospective investments.

This compendium can be downloaded directly at www.ugandainvest.go.ug/businessideas/.

Over the next few weeks leading up to the Trade and Investment Forum at the upcoming 26th Annual Convention of the Ugandan North American Association, I will endeavor to present for discussion and consideration some of these ideas.

As has been stated before, this year's Trade and Investment Forum will place greater emphasis on actual "actionable" ideas and projects with the goal of stimulating the creation of actual business ventures.

I have written many times before on the business potential in basic foods.  Here is an analysis of an opportunity in the basic grains industry.

{UAH} THIS IS COMMING IN RIGHT NOW

Friends

As I stated yesterday, we are holding Canada day tomorrow, and it is a great anniversary for we are 150 years tomorrow. As in all these celebrations, through the ministry of foreign affairs, Canada invites diplomats of countries represented in this country to visit with us as we celebrate such.  Canada does not invite diplomats from unfriendly countries, for example in last year’s invitation, the following countries were dropped off the list, North Korea, Fiji, Belarus, Iran, Syria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. We have just been informed that in processing his invitations for tomorrow on behalf of all Canadians, the office of John Baird has dropped the names of Uganda and Nigerian ambassadors off the list.  It is not clear if the diplomats of those two countries will be invited in other countries where our embassies will hold the celebrations or they will not be invited internationally. As by this posting Canada has dropped the names of the ambassador of Uganda and Nigeria from tomorrow’s invited list. We do not know if this step has anything to do with the stand of both countries on Gays and Lesbians lifestyle.

Happy Birthday Canada

{UAH} Corporal punishment affects children's brain development

On June 25, I watched a news bulletin which featured a teacher in Mukono District who beat up a boy to a point of death.
Recently, World Health Organisation carried out a research on the consequences to child abuse. They found out that 20 per cent of women, 5-10 per cent men and children are abused and 23 per cent individuals are abused during childhood.

Therefore, this should be taken seriously by all parents who abuse their children thinking that disciplining a child should be in form of canning, others neglect them, over work them ,etc.
There have been media stories of children who are burnt, beaten to death, to mention but a few. Research shows that individuals who have been exposed to childhood maltreatment have much smaller volumes of grey matter in certain brain areas, compared to those who had no history of child abuse.

This is a deficiency and can result into brain disorders.
Ugandan parents should know that child abuse is not acceptable but rather creats a deficiency to a child's brain because of the torture he/she faces.

{UAH} Shocking Probe Report on Corruption and Abuse of Office at Immigration Out

The Minister of Internal Affairs Gen Aronda has received the long
awaited report on corruption and mismanagement at the Directorate of
Citizenship and Immigration Control. Theprobe headed by D-IGP
OkothOchola gives an account of witnesses by the different people-some
of them employees in the Internal Affairs Ministry and is anticipated
to cause the much needed changes in the Directorate.

"It is an Inquiry into allegations of Corruption, Mismanagement and
Abuse of Office in the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration
Control, following the huge public outcry about service delivery in
the Directorate of Immigration", the Minister remarked majority of
which he added, were "a risk to National Security".

Hon. Aronda cited over-charging, poor customer care, and delayed
issuance of passports, challenges, he said; were a call on the
leadership to act immediately for improved service delivery.

Aronda said that he felt that there was need to expand and develop the
Directorate of Immigration in critical areas like Capacity building
and training, Human Resource, and the general automated infrastructure
of the Directorate.

Gen. Aronda also highlighted the issue of the various entry and exit
points with only a few of them being gazatted. The structure, Gen
remarked, was so restrictive, yet "there is an obvious need to
transform the Directorate with specific objectives. He cited some of
the objectives as taking care of National Security, stemming illegal
Immigration, effective and efficient manning of entry and exit points,
taking into consideration the operationalization ofEast African
Community Protocols on free movement of goods, services and people,
addressing allImmigration concerns and, to be in direct tandem with
the International Civil Authority Organisation standards.

{UAH} BETTY NAMBOOZE IS SEEKING CHEAP POPULARITY

Oil and other minerals are national assets and wealth. What exactly does Buganda mean by demanding a share? You see, Baganda, like any other peasants in Uganda, will enjoy emancipation the day they free themselves from the eating feudalists posing as their leaders. In the case of Buganda, it is Mmengo and then the Baganda elite. These simply shout for 'Buganda' kumbe they are simply self-seeking. The land tenure in Buganda renders the mukopi a pauper serf, yet the 'leaders' are ever inciting peasants into rioting over Ebyaffe, as if the peasants have anything to gain. Nambooze, Mmengo Clique et al should be seen for what they are: opportunists, who distract attention from their failures as leaders, to 'the eating' regions and tribes. The very same way national leaders blame every  one of their failures on colonialists and imperialists, who in essence are their partners in crime. Uganda's question is a class, not 'tribal' one. A peasant in Rwamahembe, is as suffering as one in Baamusakata, Oloitok or Akwara....ONLY MYOPIC SELFISH LEADERS see their 'own people' as marginalised. BUGANDA WOULD ACTUALLY BE WORSE OFF WITH A MUGANDA PRESIDENT than it is today. M7 is the greatest gift to happen to Buganda: he erased the age-old nonsense of 'Mwana w'ani', 'mwan w'eng'oma' ...he simply proved that 2st century royalty is royalty by ability, not blood, which in any case is all the same. Instead of rants, Nambooze and ilk should be focusing on what wealth Buganda sits on, and mobilise their people to work. The disservice the colonialists did to Buganda was to make them believe that there are jobs and tasks Baganda cant do, meant for 'bapakasi'. There is no tribe as abapakasi...it is a class, which one can transcend...and this is what happened, while Buganda is still stcuk in illusions

{UAH} AM TIRED OF CHRISTIANITY: Lemba Jews (Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa)

Lemba Jews (Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa)

Two Lemba men

The Lemba are an allegedly Jewish people in southern Africa, many living in modern day Zimbabwe, Malawi and South Africa. The community as a whole numbers close to 70,000. Although they speak the same Bantu languages as their African neighbors, some of the Lemba's religious practices are similar to those in Judaism. Their tradition suggests they may have migrated to Africa from the Jewish communities in Yemen.

Though the Lemba may be descended from Jewish ancestors, they have not practiced Judaism for many centuries. Lately, some have wanted to shift towards mainstream Judaism. Today, many Lemba are Christians or Muslims.

Some of the Lemba beliefs and practices that are similar to Judaism include the following:

  • They are monotheists (they call their creator God Nwali).
  • They hold one day of the week to be holy and praise Nwali (similar to the Jewish Shabbat).
  • They praise Nwali for looking after the Lemba, considering themselves a chosen people.
  • They teach their children to honor their mothers and fathers.
  • They refrain from eating pork or other foods forbidden by the Torah, or forbidden combinations of permitted foods.
  • Their form of animal slaughter, which makes meats fit for their consumption, resembles Jewish shechita.
  • They practice male circumcision (models of circumcised male organs were found at Great Zimbabwe).
  • They place a Star of David on their tombstones.
  • Lembas are discouraged from marrying non-Lembas, as Jews are discouraged from marrying non-Jews.
  • Lemba bury their dead in an extended rather than a crouched position.

Possible Lemba migration to southern Africa

According to the oral history of the Lemba, they had male ancestors who were Jews who left Judea about 2,500 years ago and settled in a place called Senna, later migrating into East Africa. According to the findings of British researcher Tudor Parfitt, Professor of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, the location of Senna was more than likely in Yemen, specifically, in the village of Sanāw, which had a vibrant Jewish population since ancient times, but dwindled to a few hundred people since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

After entering Africa, the tribe is said to have split off into two groups, with one staying in Ethiopia, and the other traveling farther south, along the east coast. The Lemba claim this second group settled in Tanzania and Kenya, and built what was referred to as "Sena II." Others were said to have settled in Malawi, where descendants reside today. Some settled in Mozambique, and eventually migrated to South Africa and Zimbabwe, where they claim to have constructed or helped construct the "great enclosure."

The Lemba prefer their children to marry other Lembas, with marriage to non-Lembas being discouraged. The restrictions on intermarriage with non-Lemba make it particularly difficult for a male non-Lemba to become a member. A woman who marries a Lemba male must learn the Lemba religion, dietary rules and other customs. She may not bring any cooking equipment from her previous home, as it may have been tainted by inappropriate use. Her children must also be brought up as Lembas.

Lemba and "the Drum that Thunders"

Lemba tradition tells of a sacred object, the ngoma lungundu or "drum that thunders", that was brought with them from Yemen. Tudor Parfitt has theorized that it was the Ark of the Covenant, lost from Jerusalem after the destruction by Nebuchadnezzar in 587 BC. In a U.K. Channel 4 television program, Parfitt claimed he had traced a missing copy of the artifact to a museum in Harare, Zimbabwe. Radiocarbon dating showed it to be over 600 years old, and Parfitt suggested that it was a replica made while the Lemba were in Yemen, after the original Ark had been destroyed.

Video featuring Dr. Parfitt can be found on YouTube. Here's the first part:

And here's a second YouTube video.

The American PBS television broadcast a documentary based on Dr. Parfitt's work on its NOVA program. There is a written report from the NOVA program, including a brief interview with Dr. Parfitt and NOVA team member David Goldstein on the findings here. A longer, more comprehensive interview by the NOVA team with Parfitt can be found here.

DNA Testing

From Wikipedia: A genetic study in 1996 suggested that more than 50% of the Lemba Y-chromosomes are Semitic in origin; a subsequent study in 2000 reported more specifically that a substantial number of Lemba men carry a particular haplotype of the Y-chromosome known as the Kohanim modal haplotype (CMH), as well as, a haplogrup of Y-DNA Haplogroup J found amongst some Jews and in other populations across the Middle East. Studies have also suggested that there is no Semitic female contribution to the Lemba gene pool.

One particular sub-clan within the Lemba, the Buba clan, is considered by the Lemba to be their priestly clan. The Buba clan carried most of the CMH found in the Lemba. Among Jews the marker is also most prevalent among Jewish Kohanim, or priests. As recounted in Lemba oral tradition, the Buba clan "had a leadership role in bringing the Lemba out of Israel" and into Southern Africa.

Links

The BBC produced a radio program that looks at the Lemba and Parfitt's "discovery" of the Ark of the Covenant.

Harry Leichter's Haruth website includes a number of excellent photographs and a long list of links to Lemba-related resource pages.

The Freeman Institute has put together a history of the Lemba with many links – worth a visit! Founder Dr. Joel Freeman has developed an expertise in African culture and history and sells a DVD called "A White Man's Journey into Black Africa" which also includes discussion on the Lemba.

The Jewish Virtual Library has a page on the Lemba.

The Kulanu website hosts a number of articles about the Lemba. These include:

  • Reports on the 2008 and 2009 visits by Ugandan Jewish spiritual leader Gershom Sizomu to the Lemba Cultural Association Conferences in Lempopo, South Africa.
  • detailed report from 2010 by Tudor Parfitt himself on his visit to the Lemba and discovery of the Ngoma Lungundu, the wooden object that the Lemba believe is sacred to their tradition and which has clear parallels, according to Parfitt, with the Ark of the Covenant.
  • Bringing books to the Lemba

A moving write-up from 2009 by Relly Coleman about her project to bring thousands of books to the Lemba.

  • A speech given by Lemba elder Rabson Wuriga about his community, its customs and its history, in Washington D.C. in 2006.
  • Rabbi Leo Abrami's visit to the Lemba in 2001. Abrami describes Shabbat services in Zimbabwe with the community and his opinion that the "awakening" of the Lemba's Jewish connection occurred in part following the inspirational rescue of Ethiopian Jews during Operation Moses.
  • An article entitled "The Story of the Lemba" written by Dr Rudo Mathivha, a member of the community.
  • Another website includes the full transcript from Dr. Mathivha's speech to the Zionist Lunch Club in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1999.
  • report from Yaakov Levi who stayed on the farm of Ephraim Selamolela, a Lemba community member, near the South African town of Louis Trichardt (yes, that's the correct name).
  • Another report on the Lemba, this time from Rufina Mausenbaum, who has her own "hidden" Jewish background, with Portuguese Bnei Anousim roots – see our detailed section on Shavei Israel's support of the Bnei Anousim in Spain, Portugal, South America and Israel.
  • letter to the editor which appeared in The Jerusalem Report following its publication of an article disputing the Lemba's claims to being Jewish. The letter in the Report was edited; the full text from Max Amichai Heppne appears here.
  • Kulana member David Turetsky responds to a post on the Eastern European Jewish History (EEJH) Yahoo Group which asserts that the Lemba have no connection to the lost tribes of Israel.
  • Lemba community member Rabson Wuriga also responds to the EEJH post.
  • The transcript of a long television report on the Lemba from Janine Lazarus, a journalist and researcher based in Johannesburg.
