At a Uhuru Park rally that was said to have been attended by one million Kenyans, the National Super Alliance finally unveiled their presidential flag bearer on Thursday, April 27. This came after months of postponing the unveiling in a bid to keep their main competitors, Jubilee Party, on their toes. It came as no surprise that ODM leader Raila Odinga was chosen as the flag bearer considering this will be his fourth and final stab at the presidency. It did, however, stun that Wiper's leader Kalonzo Musyoka was chosen as his running mate.

Weeks to the Uhuru park unveiling, there were rumours that Raila and Kalonzo were the preferred due, and this caused massive strain on the NASA bonds between the initial four co-leaders before Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto came on board. All four co-leaders jostled for the presidency and in the end, Raila-Kalonzo beat the odds to get the alliance ticket to take on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy; William Ruto. Now, news has emerged of the three key things that gave Raila top marks to beat three other co-leaders for the nod to vie as president on August 8:

1.       He has the potential to encourage high voter turnout in opposition zones
According to a report of the technical committee seen by the Standard on Friday, April 28, Raila has the alliance's confidence that he can infiltrate Jubilee's perceived strongholds and turn coalition areas to battlegrounds. In these Jubilee strongholds, it is believed Raila could secure 40 percent of the votes from Rift Valley and Mt Kenya counties. This translates to about 3.5 million votes from counties such as Kericho, Bomet, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Laikipia, Isiolo and West Pokot.

2.       Turning Jubilee strongholds into battle grounds
NASA is of the opinion that Raila has the ability to get a 50% win in Jubilee strongholds as well as win by 60% in swing vote counties.s

3.       Voter Apathy
Hi absence on the presidential aspirant ballot paper would have cost NASA 40% of their votes. His absence on the ballot paper would have caused massive voter apathy among opposition supporters. NASA believed his absence on the ballot would have cost the alliance 40% of their votes. For this reason, the alliance leaders believe that Raila's presence as the presidential flag bearer will increase the turn out in 12 counties including Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Kisumu, Busia, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Kilifi, Kwale, Homa Bay, Turkana and Mombasa. In doing so, his candidature guaranteed the alliance of at least 4.6 million votes out of 8.2 million.

The intriguing details of this power sharing deal were also announced at the rally as a measure to prevent any co-leader from going back on their agreement.
