Daesh intensifies attacks and violence once again on civilians observing the holy month of Ramadan.

As predicted, Daesh has unleashed a fresh wave of coordinated suicide attacks just days into the start of Ramadan, killing innocent children and families in Baghdad, Iraq and Deir ez-Zour, Syria.

On Monday, two attacks in the space of twelve hours killed at least 27 people on the streets of Baghdad, with crowds preparing for the Ramadan fast.

Targeting Shia Muslims, the first attack occurred shortly after midnight. A suicide bomber targeted the popular ice cream shop al-Faqma, killing at least 16 and injuring 75. The second attack happened just a few hours later; the car bomb was detonated close to government offices, which killed 11 and injured at least 40.

Also on Monday, just before sundown, Daesh shelled government-held areas in Deir ez- Zour. The shelling targeted neighbourhoods with reports stating at least 13 civilians, including women and children, have been killed.

Daesh considers Shia Muslims to be disbelievers and frequently carry out attacks against them. But, in Daesh-controlled regions, Sunni Muslims are starving under their rule. As Daesh continues to lose ground, it is likely that attacks will increase. "Nowhere is safe, the fighting is coming closer to people's homes, families are terrified of the mortars," said one civilian.

Ramadan is often marked with a surge in violence. Last year, a huge truck bomb targeted a large retail area in Karrada, Baghdad. The blast killed over 300, which marked the single bloodiest event in Baghdad since the toppling of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
