A GUNMAN who took a woman hostage and killed another man in Melbourne had previously faced court over a terror plot to attack an Australian army base, say local reports.
A flurry of gunfire was heard as officers swooped on an apartment block in Brighton, Melbourne, killing the attacker in a dramatic shoot-out today.
hey believe the call came from within the building as they could hear a woman screaming in the background.
Channel 7 reporter Paul Dowsley said police had told the network the phone number which made the call matched the gunman's mobile number.
He told radio station 3AW the receptionist who took the phone call said the voice on the phone had "chilled her to the bone".
The receptionist said the caller "seemed very firm and the woman in the background was clearly distressed".
Three cops were injured during the siege after a shoot-out with the gunman.
Residents also reported hearing an explosion but police said they were not aware of one, and this was more likely to have been gunfire.
Victoria Police said the bomb squad was on site, with robots spotted and experts shown wearing heavy protective gear.
After being called by a woman – believed to be the hostage – police arrived at the scene to find a man had been shot dead in the foyer of the Bay St apartment block.

Police tried to negotiate with a man in one of the apartments who had a female hostage with him.
The area was cordoned off by heavily armed specialist officers with locals warned to stay away, it was reported by The Herald Sun.
Witnesses said they hear an "explosion" sound at around 4.30pm local time at the serviced apartments near the Nepean Highway and were evacuated shortly after.
Locals were ordered to take cover in a nearby Coles supermarket as the area was put on lockdown.
Witness Ben Vieth was standing on his balcony about 150 metres from the scene when gunfire erupted just after 6pm local time.
He said: "Next minute we heard the machine gun go off.
"It was absolutely terrifying. It went for probably three or four seconds — just constant fire.
"The police were just screaming at people to run and take cover.
"People were just ducking and running. I was just in shock — I couldn't stand up. It was full on.
"The noise was just deafening. It wasn't a couple of shots. It sounded like 20 or 30 shots."
A man reportedly called the local Channel 7 newsroom during the siege to say "This is for IS, this is for Al-Qaeda".
Victoria Police statement said they are investigating whether the incident is terrorism related.
The attacker has been named as 29-year-old Yacqub Khayre, who was accused – but later acquitted – of plotting a suicide attack at the Holsworthy army barracks in 2009, reports the Herald Sun, citing senior law enforcement and government officials.
Reports suggest after being acquitted of the terror plot, drug-addicted Khayre was jailed for a violent burglary in which he repeatedly punched a man and his daughter when they disturbed him.
Somalia-born Khayre was jailed for five years and six months in October 2013, and ordered to serve at least three years, The Age reported at the time.
Armed police shot the hostage-taker dead and rescued a woman in her 20s who was being held against her will.
