John McDonnell told Sky News' Sophy Ridge the  was in "absolute disarray" and should allow  to create a minority government despite  talks starting on Monday.

The demand for Mrs May to resign came after Ridge confronted Mr McDonnell with claims he refuses to accept the result of a democratic election as he called for people to take to the streets in protest.

Mr McDonnell said yesterday: "Well, the result was that nobody won, no party won. The Conservatives got the largest number of seats and they are trying to do a deal with the DUP.

"I oppose that deal and I believe it would be better to have another general election. Now that might come sooner rather than later."

Ridge shot in: "Even though Brexit talks are supposed to be starting on Monday?"

To which the Labour politician said: "I'm afraid the problem on the Brexit talks is that we have a Government is disarray.

"I do not know which particular line of approach is being made by the Government because they are in complete division.

"So I think actually, removing this Government, allowing a Labour government if necessary a minority government to come into place, would give us clearer direction on all of this."

Asked if he believes Mr Corbyn could be prime minister by the end of the year, Mr McDonnell said the Tories should let Labour take their place in Downing Street.

He said: "I think at the moment the way the current Government is so unstable.

"I think they are in absolute disarray and it would be better standing down and letting Labour take their place."

Earlier this week the to spread the party's 'for the many and not the few' message.

Mr McDonnell said: "We need people doing everything they can to ensure the election comes as early as possible."

Speaking at the annual conference of the food-workers union the BFAWU, the Labour politician called on the TUC (Trades Union Congress) - which represents 50 unions - to galvanise its members to join the protest.

He said: "What we need now is the TUC mobilised, every union mobilised, get out on the streets.

"Just think if the TUC put out that call - that we want a million on the streets of London in two weeks' time."
