{UAH} NEW FACE OF ISLAMIC TERROR: SOMALIAN Yacqub Khayre
A man reportedly called the local Channel 7 newsroom during the siege to say "This is for IS, this is for Al-Qaeda".
Victoria Police statement said they are investigating whether the incident is terrorism related.
The attacker has been named as 29-year-old Yacqub Khayre, who was accused – but later acquitted – of plotting a suicide attack at the Holsworthy army barracks in 2009, reports the Herald Sun, citing senior law enforcement and government officials.
Reports suggest after being acquitted of the terror plot, drug-addicted Khayre was jailed for a violent burglary in which he repeatedly punched a man and his daughter when they disturbed him.
Somalia-born Khayre was jailed for five years and six months in October 2013, and ordered to serve at least three years, The Age reported at the time.
Armed police shot the hostage-taker dead and rescued a woman in her 20s who was being held against her will.
