{UAH} West Virginia Senator, Shelley Moore Capito against US Senate health care bill

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va. announced Tuesday she is opposed to the Senate Republican health care proposal.

"The Senate health care bill is not the right fix for West Virginia, and I cannot support it," she said.

Capito released a joint statement with Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio.

She said she has consistently looked for opportunities to improve former President Barack Obama's health care law, even sponsoring legislation earlier this year.

"West Virginia has the largest Medicaid population in the country," the senator said. "I recognize that many West Virginians rely on health coverage and access to substance abuse treatment because of my state's decision to expand coverage through Medicaid."

Capito added the Senate health care bill is not going to improve health care for West Virginians.

"As drafted, this bill will not ensure access to affordable health care in West Virginia, does not do enough to combat the opioid epidemic that is devastating my state, cuts traditional Medicaid too deeply and harms rural health care providers," she said.

Capito's statement comes after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced a vote on the bill will be moved until after the chamber's Fourth of July recess.

The Congressional Budget Office released a report Monday estimating 22 million more Americans would lose health care coverage compared to if the current health care system remained in place.

The federal deficit would decrease by $321 billion, with savings coming from reductions to Medicaid spending.
