{UAH} Machar Rebels Capture Gov’t Commissioner, SPLA General in Bentui

South Sudan leader of opposition, Dr. Riek Machar

Rebels loyal to former South Sudan Vice President Dr Riek Machar have captured a government commissioner and army general in the oil rich capital of Greater Unity area, Bentui on Sunday.

According to sources in the town, fighting started in the outskirts of Bentui; Tharwangyiely, Tore-abieth, Nhialdiu and oilfields during the day and lasted several hours.

"The sound of heavy machines and smoke rocked the town," a source working with one of the relief organizations told ChimpReports.

It is understood the forces loyal to the First Vice President, Gen. Taban Deng who joined the mainstream SPLA (in government) last week advanced to the area to take its control from the forces of Machar.

During the fierce fighting on Sunday, Rubkoni County Commissioner, Tek Ruathdel and Gen. Guey Duop who leads a militia allied to Taban Deng, were captured in the town and are still in the hands of the rebels.

Oil fields in the greater Unity State that used to produce 120,000 barrels of oil per day have been shut down due to the conflict that started in December 2013.

It was the third State to be captured by rebels during the beginning of the war and interestingly Taban Deng was the governor of the area.

Taban defected from Kiir and joined Machar immediately the latter declared war.
