{UAH} No age limit after death, you’ll go-Nganda reminds Museveni

Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ssemujju Nganda, has reminded President Yoweri Museveni that once he is taken to parliament in a casket, he will have no more age limit but will have to go.

The worked up Nganda was paying a tribute to former Democratic Party president and Kampala mayor, John Ssebaana Kizito on Thursday.

The greatest achievement of Ssebaana probably, Nganda noted, was his ability to conduct business in a harsh environment.

"What the Prime Minister [Ruhakana Rugunda] forgot to say is the work of Late Ssebaana is being undermined as he put measures in the constitution," Nganda told the house during a special sitting presided over by deputy Speaker, Hon Jacob Oulanyah.

He praised the late Ssebaana for being passionate about young people, though in Uganda when one calls youths, old people show up.

Nganda said it was the desire of the Late Ssebaana that Uganda doesn't change the constitution by uplifting the age limit.

"We want to thank the late Ssebaana for fighting transition, some people are waiting for God for succession to happen," Nganda said.

Taking a jibe at Museveni who 30 years later still clings onto power, Nganda said: "To some of you who don't want to leave power, the day you will be brought here, you will not refuse to go.

"With death, there is no age limit, there will be no lifting the age limit, whether you like it or not, you will go," the legislator was loud and clear.

A section of legislators are demanding for a referendum on the proposed constitutional amendment to lift the age limit for persons seeking to contest for the presidency.

The demand comes at the backdrop of reports a section of National Resistance Movement – NRM legislators have mooted a plan to amend the constitution to allow Museveni to contest for the presidency in 2021 and that the constitutional amendment bill on the same has already been gazetted.

Under the current provision in article 102(b) of the 1995 constitution, President Museveni would not be eligible to contest for the seat.

Born in 1944 and in power since 1986, Museveni will hit the limit before the next presidential election.

Article 102(b) states that a person is qualified for election as President if that person is not less than 35 years and not more than 75 years. President Museveni will be 73 this year and 77 in 2021.
