The ex-wife of the Liberian former president and warlord Charles Taylor has appeared in court in London. Agnes Reeves Taylor has been charged with torture offences allegedly committed during the Liberian civil war, which began in nineteen-eighty-nine. Mrs Taylor, who is an academic based in east London, had her bail application rejected. Her former husband, Charles Taylor, is serving a fifty year prison sentence for war crimes. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in the civil war.
