-- This documentary was shown here yesterday and was watched by one of the biggest audiences in British television. It is a harrowing story, of how a mother describes how her own son's tragic, but short journey, how he travels from being a loving, but wayward boy, into a muslim convert and then is slowly transformed into a monster- all within the space of about 2 years. It is the most moving story ever captured on television. It describes how a mother tries to come to terms with the fact that she gave birth to, and raised a monster.
The most moving part of the documentary is the shock by the mother that British society actually fully sympathised with her plight and no one put any blame on her that her son became a muslim and a terrorist. The documentary charts her own journey of spiritual redemption- of trying to understand how her world collapsed around her, and her attempts to pick up the pieces again- and try to be human again. Despite all the barbaric and demonic cruelty that her own son inflicted on totally innocent victims, including the massacre of the 146 students of the Garissa Christian University in Kenya, the documentary shows that nevertheless human beings remain essentially good and kind. full of compassion and love. We are not born evil, but can be turned into monsters, sometimes by forces beyond our own control. This is the overriding message the mother delivers- that we human beings were made for love, and not evil, and that we should forgive those who commit evil, just as she has forgiven her son who committed some of the most horrible crimes imaginable.
