{UAH} Uganda to hold a referendum on seven year presidential term

Uganda to hold a referendum on seven year presidential term
Opposition MPs are seeking an injunction blocking the implementation of the Constitutional amendment act 2017, and this referendum is one of the things the injunction would block.

Cabinet has passed a resolution backing the holding of a referendum on the extension of the Presidential term of office from 5 years to 7 years.

The decision follows the passing of the constitutional amendment act of 2017 which amended the constitution to extend the presidential and parliamentary terms of office.

The constitutional Amendment act 2017 faces two challenges in the constitutional court, one from opposition MPs, and the Uganda law society.

The law society is questioning some of the clauses in the Act, while opposition MPs are questioning the manner in which the Act was passed in parliament.

Both groups want the constitutional court to quash the bill.

The opposition MPs are also seeking an injunction blocking the implementation of the Constitutional amendment act 2017.
