Homa Bay Woman Representative, Gladys Wanga, has expressed concerns regarding the arrest of Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) Philomena Mwilu, citing a possible political witch-hunt behind the high profile arrest.

Wanga lauded the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Noordin Haji, for his hard work but cautioned him to be more strategic and careful than he was.

Appearing on Citizen TV on Thursday, August 29, Wanga pointed out the circumstances under which Mwilu was arrested left many wondering whether or not it had something to do with the 'we shall revisit" threat that was issued by the Jubilee Party following the Supreme Court ruling that overturned President Uhuru Kenyatta's August 8 poll victory.
"There is no way we are going to run away from DCJ's case looking political because of the circumstances surrounding. You cannot isolate the environment in which we are operating from. Kenyans have questions and this is a big test for the DPP. Is it a revisit or succession within Judiciary?" Wanga posed.

The Woman Rep added the statement issued by the DPP to justify the dramatic arrest of Mwilu was not evidence and that she was still waiting to see the concrete evidence Haji talked about.
"I want to see what the charges really are, something more concrete that what we have seen circulate. I will also be looking at how the magistrate will handle the matter. And If you have got to the point of DCJ then we are figuratively looking at more arrests like the Deputy President of Kenya," she said.

As was previously reported by TUKO.co.ke, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party in which Wanga belongs to also expressed similar reservations even as it commended the DPP for doing a good job in the war against graft.
"We have taken note of the spirited will with which the new Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has taken to his job. However, the Party wishes to remind him not to open his office to manipulation especially by state and non-state actors. This is especially so when the charges he brings appear openly frivolous, lacking in substance, and reeking of political witch-hunt," the party said.

The DPP however refuted claims he was working under instructions, saying his office was independent and its decisions, including the move to arrest the DCJ, was not influenced by anyone and that the all arrests were made based on evidence.
"The evidence in our possession revealed Lady Justice Mwilu abused her office for personal gain. She accepted a gift in the form of money in circumstances which undermined public confidence in the integrity of her office. She also obtained execution of a security belonging to Imperial Bank Limited now in receivership by false pretence," Haji said.
