Makerere University Voted Best Public University
As celebrations to mark Makerere University's 90 years of existence click into top gear, this great institution has scooped yet another top accolade, which will surely spur it on its journey of building for the future.
Makerere University has been voted by Ugandans as the Best Public University of the Year. Indeed, the award has added more excitement in the mix as the management and staff, students, alumni, development partners, friends and well-wishers of Makerere University celebrate its 90-year journey.
The award followed an appraisal by Public Opinions Inc, which was incorporated in 2008 by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. The institution currently focuses on strategic research, individual and institutional public relations to contribute to national, regional and the global development agenda.
In the Best Public University of the Year Award category, Makerere University beat off competition from Busitema University, Gulu University, Kyambogo and Mbarara University of Science and Technology, to scoop the top award. The award giving ceremony was held at Imperial Royale in Kampala on March 22, 2013.
The Prime Minister of Uganda, the Rt. Hon. Amama Mbabazi, handed over the award to a delegation from Makerere University, which was led by Dr. Muhammad Kiggundu Musoke, Chairperson of Makerere University Academic Staff Association. Also on the team were: Professor Maria Musoke, the Makerere University Librarian; Hajati Fatuma Nakatudde, Chairperson of Makerere University Administrative Staff Association; Mr. Ben Mugisha, the representative of the NUEIU; and Ms Ritah Namisango, the Senior Public Relations Officer.
The delegation was nominated by the Ag.Vice Chancellor, Professor Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa.
The large audience, which comprised investors and corporate organizations, applauded with deafening cheers as the award was handed over to the Makerere delegation.
The citation on the certificate read:
"Awarded to Makerere University, Best Public University of the Year, Having been voted for by the People of Uganda in appreciation and recognition of your contribution towards attainment of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in Uganda, and promoting and upholding International Best Practices and Standards as defined by the Ten Universal Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, The United Nations Millennium Declaration, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, UN Convention against corruption."
Dr. Muhammad Kiggundu Musoke thanked the people of Uganda for voting Makerere University as the Best Public University of the Year, which he said was a recognition of the contribution of Makerere University to the transformation of society as a whole.
"The Award is a manifestation of the trust that the people of Uganda have vested in Makerere University. We hope to win more awards because we have highly qualified staff committed to the provision of high quality research, teaching and learning and services responsive to national and global needs," said Dr. Kiggundu-Musoke.
He appealed to the Government to support all efforts aimed at improving the remuneration of staff so as to attract and retain qualified staff at the University.
The Uganda Responsible Investment Awards aim at recognizing and honouring companies and institutions that through their investment and provision of services, have significantly contributed to the transformation of people's lives at the national and international levels, with emphasis on the National Development Plan and the realization of the Millennium Development Goals.
