Police Yet To Find Rakai Killers – IGP Kayihura

Police are yet to find the suspects behind the gruesome murder of nine people in Kanabulemu Village in Kyebe Sub-county in Rakai District, Kale Kaihura, the Inspector general of police has revealed.

On 14th January this year, unidentified assailants broke into the house of Steven Mugambe, the Pastor Kyebe Pentecostal Church and hacked him to death together with his wife Noreen Nalinya and seven others. They are Jane Nakiwala, Andrew Mpeyirwe, Christine Nansimbwa, Maria Musanya, Dan Semwanga, Grace Nakimbugwe and Max Nakirija.

It is believed that the murder victims were doused with chloroform by the assailants before they hacked them to death.

The assailants drilled a hole in the wall of the pastor's house, which they used to gain entry and kill their victims. Shortly after the incident Kale Kaihura, the Inspector General of Police deployed William Okalanyi, the head of the Uganda Police Force Homicide Department together with dozens of detectives from Police headquarters to investigate the murder.

Close to seven months now, no suspect has been arrested in connection to the murder. Kaihura says despite the fact that investigations are still ongoing, they have failed to get any clues on the masterminds of the murder. The IGP was speaking on Saturday during the commissioning of the newly built Kalegero Police Station in Kiseka Sub-county-Lwengo district.

Kaihura said that they have managed to arrest several suspects in connection with other murders in Rakai but said the issue of Kyebe's slain family is still very complicated. He said they have got some leads, which they a still following to trace the kill.  Kayihura declined to divulge details saying it would jeopardize their investigations. Ronald Mbaziira and Julius Kilyowa, both children of the late Steven Mugambe have asked police to expedite the investigations and find the killers of their parents and other members of their family. At least 21 people have been brutally murdered in Rakai district under mysterious circumstances. Residents suspects that the murders could be connected to long standing land disputes.

They fault police and local leadership for failing to carry out thorough investigations into the murders despite deploying several cops in the area. Robert Benon Mugabi, the Rakai LC5 chairman believes the murder case involving Mugambe and members of his family, is too complicated for the area police to handle. He says investigations should be handled by more senior police personnel.

He queries preliminary police findings that link the incident to terrorism saying that terrorists could not target a specific family.
