[UAH] Uhuru ... in Uganda fiction

What happened to our Uhuru? Were the fruits of independence as illusionary as our "nkuba kyeyo" protagonist, Uhuru, in "Chain of Spring Love", a Uganda novel?

"Uhuru settles in Rotterdam, with a geology degree from a European university and hope for a career at Royal Chelloil. But swift rejection leads to a degrading and dangerous life as an illegal alien. Working odd jobs to support his family, a loving wife, Mapenzi, and his daughter, Juliana, he faithfully sends home money to Uganda every month. But as gardener at the House of Java, the sophisticated Inge tests Uhuru's marital fidelity. Her rebuffed suitor seals his fate."
