"Bwizibwera is a den for criminals who in the night stage roadblocks, attack homes and torment people. We found some young men sleeping on a floor in a small room but we asked what they do to earn a living they could not explain. These are some of the criminals that terrorising people," said Mr Rwecungura.

Mbarara- Exactly one week after carrying out a cordon-and-search operation in Kakoba Division in Mbarara Town against criminals and army deserters, the police and army yesterday conducted a similar operation in more parts of Mbarara and Ibanda districts.
Like the previous one, the operation started at around 3am but this time in Bwizibwera town in Kashari, located 25km on Mbarara-Ibanda road, Rutooma trading centre located 28kms on the same route and Igorora trading centre located about 50kms from Mbarara.
They mounted roadblocks on routes leading to and outside the towns like Mbarara-Ibanda, Bizibwera-Buhweju and Ibanda –Mbarara roads where travellers were asked to identify themselves.
They searched several houses for weapons and tools criminals use. More than 100 people were arrested, two army uniforms and weapons suspected to have been used by criminals, such as iron bars, were recovered. The suspects were screened and by press time, they had zeroed on 20 who were transferred to Mbarara Central Police Station.
Mr Elly Rwecungura, the Rwanyamahembe Sub-county security officer, said it is common that when operations are carried out in big towns, criminals run to small ones like Bwizibwera.
Among those arrested were landlords who reportedly did not notify the local council officials about their tenants and what they did for a living.
The officer in-charge of Bwizibwera Police Station, Mr Topher Akamanya, said common cases registered in the area include cattle thefts, robbery along the roads, especially Mbarara –Ibanda highway, burglary and use of drugs.
The UPDF second Division Spokesperson, Capt. Ronald Kakurungu, said the army is helping the police to prevent crime. Ms Polly Namaye, the Rwizi region police spokesperson, said those arrested would be taken to court to answer various charges.
"We have 20. Some of these were found with suspected stolen property. We got many people without identification but we had to release them when LC officials identified them. We have warned them to get identification," Ms Namaye said.
More than 300 people were arrested during the July 3 operation. After screening all were released except 34, who face various charges, including illegal possession of government stores, robbery, murder and desertion. Ten pairs of army uniform and two police attire were recovered during the operation.
