Tanzanian leader warns Rwandan counterpart against threatening border security

The Tanzanian president, Jakaya Kikwete, said that anyone who dares threaten border security of his country's borders will undergo rigorous defence forces of Tanzania.
Jakaya Kikwete made this declaration 25 July in Dar es Salaam on the occasion of the celebration of the feast of the youth in the town of Kagera in Rwanda border.

President Kikwete said the Tanzanian army is ready to face any provocation at any time on Tanzania's border. This is when a tension is increasingly being observed between Rwanda and Tanzania.
This squabble has its origins in President Kikwete's statement last June calling on Rwanda to open direct negotiations with the FDLR [Defence Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda] which fled to Democratic Republic of Congo.
This proposal had angered the Rwandan president, Paul Kagame, who responded by saying that the day he meets the author of this proposal, he will slap him.
Since then, the two countries have been observing each other like dogs to the point that they avoid each other in major international meetings relating to the Great Lakes.
In his statement after the visit on 25 July in Kagera, at the memorial of Tanzanian soldiers who fell on the battlefield in 1978-1979 during the war between Uganda and Tanzania, President Kikwete said, "Sleep in peace. Do not follow the weak rumours spread here and there. Our army is good. It stands ready to correct anyone who dares invade our territory. Our country is at peace and our army fit to protect our homeland."
President Kikwete added that, "Our main message today is that we are ready at any moment, at any time to defend the integrity of our territory and borders.
We have no other country. We will not allow anyone to play with our living space. As we dealt with Idi Amin, we'll take care of him too."

According to Tanzanian observers, these statements by President Kikwete were intended to send a stern warning to Rwanda after some rather hard words delivered by Paul Kagame against Tanzania.
