Man drowns in well during pursuit of sh13,000
Police in Kampala Thursday recovered the body of a man who drowned in a well as he attempted to retrieve a bucket in exchange for sh13, 000.
The incident took place at about 12:20 pm local time (EAT).
Kampala metropolitan police spokesman Ibin Ssenkumbi identified the deceased as Shaban Nsamba, 42, of Kawanda in Wakiso district.
Nsamba reportedly drowned as he attempted to collect the bucket from the well of his neighbor, identified as Deo Wakuza.
The neighbor is said to have sought the services of Nsamba on approval of neighbors who allegedly said he was an expert in doing such jobs.
The unlucky man was immediately hired to retrieve the bucket after it had got disentangled from the rope that was used for pulling it out when filled with water down the well.
"He was reportedly lowered into the well using a rope only for him to abandon the rope after getting hold of the bucket and attempt to come out using the steps on the well's walls. The steps reportedly broke, sending Nsamba into the water," reported Ssenkumbi.
Efforts of the police fire brigade to save Nsamba were fruitless as they arrived at the scene a little too late. Nsamba had died already.
