{UAH} NEBANDA DEATH: Police Fails to Pay Key Witnesses

Four key witnesses in the trial of the death of Cerinah Nebanda, the Butaleja district Woman MP are crying foul play.

They reportedly accuse police bosses of swindling 10 million shillings that was allegedly meant for them as key witnesses. After the death of Nebanda late last year, police took in Emmanuel Kiza, a clinical intern, Mariam Nalwanga, a nurse and a laboratory assistant and another unidentified person from Good Hope Clinic in Kasanga who tried to resuscitate the MP after she collapsed.

The trio was picked up by Moses Segawa, a property agent from Kasanga Kiwafu and Adam Kalungi Sulaiman's close friend and took them to his house to treat the MP before she was taken to Mukwaya General Clinic where she died.

They were taken into witness protection and were first kept at Muyenga International Hotel before they were moved to Kirekka under unclear circumstances. They were supposed to testify as key witnesses against Adam Sulaiman Kalungi, the Late Nebanda's boyfriend in whose house she died.

Adam Kalungi and his five co-accused – Abid Rashid Butt, Noor Abubakar, Khan Babu Abdul, Ali Omar Almuzahim and Fatimah Babu alias Tuma; are accused of supplying narcotic drugs, which led to the death of the MP.

They were charged with manslaughter before Makindye Chief Magistrate's court and remanded to Luzira prison. However, sources close to the group say that after being used as witnesses by police they have been abandoned them despite the fact they lost income for the period they spent the under witness protection program.

The group had earlier been promised sponsorship to study abroad and their academic transcripts taken. However, they were shocked after police asked them to leave their houses in Kireka and return home without being compensated for lost income and time.

The four witnesses are reluctant to leave their holding house after learning that Moses Segawa who was used to testify against Adam Kalungi's close friend was paid 10million shillings.

The group has since been making contact with the senior police leadership to voice their concern in vain. Gen. Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police told local media that they are taking good care of the trio and promised to find out what had become of their money.
