[UAH] OUT ON BAIL COL SHABAN BANTARIZA

The UPDF officer, who is charged with misuse of Shs67m during his reign as head of National Leadership Institute (NALI), Kyankwanzi was let free after presenting substantial sureties - Minister Kahinda Otafiire and Col John Mary Kaganda before Makindye General Court Martial boss, Brig. Moses Ddiba Ssentongo. He was last week denied bail. Brig. Ssentongo said Bantariza must put his bail application in writing. He faces three counts of fraud, tampering with documents and attempted fraud. Prosecution alleges that on February 3, 2011 at Akamba Uganda Ltd, Plot 12 Old Port Bell Road in Kampala district, being the director of NALI, Bantariza received a tractor, registration number UAN 652Z and its accessories donated to NALI by the ministry of Finance. He claimed to have purchased the tractor at shs67m. The former army publicist was on Monday July 1, 2013 picked from his home in Bweyogerere, Wakiso district by military intelligence operatives before parading him at the Court Martial the following day. Col Bantariza's arrest had annoyed President Museveni who expressed his desire to have him released as soon as possible.   It was feared Bantariza fell victim to wrangles among officers in the UPDF, a charge the army denies.
