{UAH} Uganda doesn’t need another civil war
There are rumors in the air that Uganda could slide into a civil war possibly this year. Those who believe in wars to solve problems are perhaps looking forward to it. Those of us who don't are doing everything possible to prevent it.
Wars destroy lives and properties massively and reduce countries to inferior positions. Because of constant wars in France started by Louis XIV, France lost its leadership role to the United Kingdom. The First and Second World Wars made Europe lose its edge to the two superpowers of USA and Soviet Union.
Uganda that has been engulfed in political instability and wars going as far back as the 1966 attack on Mengo has lost human condition leadership to Kenya and Tanzania that were far behind at independence. Uganda is now a failed state.
Buganda that was far ahead of other regions in economic and social development is losing its edge because of wars on its soil including those of 1966, 1979 and 1981-1986 that left half of the people of Luwero Traiangle dead and properties extensively destroyed and as a consequence Buganda is an occupied nation.
Another war wherever it starts will end up in the Luwero Triangle because you can't capture the capital city of Kampala without going through the Triangle. And the closer you get to the capital, the more destructive the fighting becomes. Baganda do you really want another war on your soil or are you ready to participate in non-violent efforts to unseat NRM and then participate in a transitional government that embraces all stakeholders including NRM except those that are alleged to have committed crimes?
Last weekend, I proposed a transitional government idea and was discussed with Yakobo and Sajabi on Radio Munansi English program. There was a suggestion that the tricky issue of who should become president during the transitional period be resolved by having a presidential commission of five people one each from the four regions and Greater Kampala. There was agreement in principle and some people contacted me privately supporting the idea.
Fellow Ugandans, please pray and search your souls for an alternative that will avoid a civil war. We also appeal to our development partners especially the United States of America and the United Kingdom to lend a helping hand to resolve our differences by peaceful means. However, we should stand ready to use any other means necessary should the peaceful option fail and Uganda and her people continue to be abused and robbed by the NRM government.
