Patients sharing a bed, but without a mattress in Mityana Regional Referral Hospital yesterday
By Luke Kagiri
Mityana Hospital does not have key medical equipment, that the medical officers need to attend to patients, New Vision has learnt.
The most affected sections are the maternity ward, theatre and the dental departments, which have no tools or have those that are old and worn-out.
Sources in the hospital said for long, the theatre has not had an operating bed until recently when one was borrowed from Maanyi Health Centre III in Busujju county.
Even so, the operating bed, which the hospital used to have, had also been borrowed from Mwera Health Centre, about 15 years ago.
Dr. Fred Lwasampijja, the Mityana district health officer, said: "It is true we just borrowed the bed. However, the operating bed is not the only item that we do not have."
A senior medical personnel in Mityana Hospital, who preferred not to be named because he is not authorised to speak for the hospital, said they are operating the theatre, without the essential equipment.
"We do not have an auto-clave and a washing machine. Even the operating bed we borrowed is not enough. That means we can only attend to one patient at a time."
Sources said the hospital also desperately needs an incubator as well as equipment used in the X-ray department.
Mityana Hospital was built in the early 1940s, but is in a dilapidated state with old buildings and rusty beds.
In addition, most of the beds have very old mattresses or nothing at all.
