{UAH} RESPONSE TO TIM

Tim,
Freedom of Speech, as protected in the US constitution, does not apply to "private actors" like you and I (and certainly not to UNAA). The rights mentioned in the constitution are aimed at stopping GOVERNMENT actors like State and Federal authorities and their agents.
Simply put, private organizations like UNAA and private individuals like you and I, have the right to discriminate against speech we don't likeand we don't have to explain ourselves to anyone. The freedoms and rights in the 1st amendment of Federal Constitutional are not directed at private individuals.

Even if UNAA was a government actor/agent, "Freedom of Speech" is not absolute. It has several exceptions. In this case, some of the relevant exceptions are: slanderous speech, fighting words and obscenity. Speech (emails) that fall under that category is clearly not protected.
thanks

Victor,

Those are great observations. As someone who also operates and maintains a news blog the UNAA website hosts [Memberclicks] could create a forum were members can log on and view comments. That way they do not fill people's in-boxes with material unrelated to the convention... Otherwise at this rate we might miss out on important reminders especially now that the convention is less than 30 days away. A yahoo or google group were people log in and out using their emails and password should be a solution. Personally I look forward to seeing an issue based campaign were the candidates articulate their visions for UNAA over the next 25 years!

My two cents!

I do agree with you Timothy that people cannot be prevented from voicing their opinions online and are free to voice them in the way that suits them in order to get their message across, however for a lot of members, email is a sacred medium and if they too choose that they do not want to be part of the general discussion, they should have the same rights as those who want to voice their opinions and opt not to listen. The way this should be done is through some form of opt-out like is done for commercial emails. Damalie and Maliza should have a way to opt-out if they should so choose to.

I have heard some people mention that they do not want their emails flooded and would rather not keep deleting UNAAList emails in order to get to what is important to them.  Consider the fact that some people use their emails for business as well as pleasure.

Please consider allowing people to opt-out of this mailing list if they so choose to.

Thanks,

Hello,
Thank you so much for voicing your concerns.

While many of us share your view, I trust you will agree that the administrator of this discussion forum needs to respect everyone's right to freedom of speech. Sadly that even includes opinions which contain content that many of us would consider unbecoming.

That said efforts have been made behind the scenes and the major actors have each received a request to exercise some self-censorship and show some sensitivity to other readers. Since UNAALIST is the property of UNAA, a formal request for next steps over this matter has been submitted to UNAA's Executive Committee. If it is felt that UNAA's Code of Conduct has been violated the matter will go before the Board of Trustees and disciplinary action may follow.

In the meantime, you and I have a role to play by actively offering up other valuable topics of discussion. Like the saying goes, evil happens when good people do nothing. It takes some courage and more effort than we would have wanted to expend but we each have to stand up to defend and project what we believe.

I know that the overwhelming majority in here would gladly and politely respond to any request for information on UNAA and the upcoming convention. Let us ask these questions, let us get involved.

UNAA needs you now, do not walk away.
