{UAH} WHEN WILL BAGANDA AND BUGANDA GET THIS RIGHT?

By Oryema Johnson

The interest of Baganda and federalism have always been in the heart of every Muganda, but they have been unable to put that interest in effect even though, they seem to have an upper hand in Uganda than other ethnic population.

(1) Buganda is the heart and artery of Uganda's economy, trade and international partnerships (all foreign embassies and international organizations are based in Buganda-Kampala), Uganda's international airport is based in Buganda, technically any foreign visitor who enters Uganda by air arrives in Buganda first..

(2) Of all the Kingdoms in Uganda, Buganda is the most known one outside the country. Internationally, it joins those of Lesotho (King Moshosho), Swaziland (King Muswatti), Botswana (Sereste Khama), Ghana (Nana of Ashanti), Morocco (King Hassan), and perhaps the Empire of Ethiopia under the former Emperor Haille Selasi.

(3) Every government in Uganda starting with that of Governor Cohen, Queen's representative in Uganda signed a pact with Buganda. Obote I welcomed Sir Edward Mutesa to become a partner in Uganda empya (new Uganda) on October 9th, even though Buganda had declared its own independence on October 8th.

Amin married Sarah Kyolaba and even had her as a co-navigator during one of those Uganda Safari rallies as a sign that he appreciated Buganda and wanted to be their friend.

During one of his visits to Uganda Airfoce base Entebbe, according to a clip of him Peter posted a few days ago, Amin was heard talking in Luganda to a certain pilot called Mutono saying "oli bulungi" (are you alright?).

In 1979 after Amin's fall, a Muganda Prof. Lule, was appointed the interim president to win Buganda over then followed by Binaisa when Lule resorted to ebyaffe mostly saying it in Luganda.

Then the mother of all this showed up: Museveni promising to restore the entire Kingdom which he did. Immediately, Buganda declared "Kati twebaka otulo" (now we can sleep), abadokoli bagenze (these anyanyas have now gone).

24 years later, all of a sudden Baganda have joined those who have not slept since 1986 when Museveni declared fundamental change because anyanyas had retreated home (north).

The question now comes: "When will Buganda get its interest off the ground?" What is the problem? Are they going to bed with wrong devils (Obote, Amin, Obote II, Okello and Okello and Museveni) all the time?

I for one, I am for "federalism" in Uganda and would bend backwards for it, but somehow, Buganda is stuck somewhere and unable to get the message clear to the other Ugandans with which it shares the same territory.
