{UAH} Association of Friends of The Persian Culture (FOPCA)

Farouk,

Thank you very much for this information.

If you could please find more information about this and other organizations, we would appreciate it.

We should be able to bring this as a case study to the UNAA Executive, and see what can work for UNAA.

Thank you very much. With the support of the Executive, we will work to constitute a committee to study different Associations.

Mr President,
Congratulations and wish you the best of best during your two year term. Prevously i wrote on this forum asking whoever comes to office to borrow some ideas from other association with a similar formation of UNAA.
I would suggest you look at ASSOCIATION OF FRIENDS OF THE PERSIAN CULTURE.  (www.fopca.com) It is celebrated 23 years on this past laborday, they had a registration of over 3,000 people at $100 and this goes up in the increments of $10 and can't exceed $110.
Usual participation ranges between 2300 to 3000 and the number keeps growing. As of last night the financial statement presented to all the members of the association was $300.000 dollars after taking care of all the expenses at Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center.
The association has 2 full time employees @$18,000/ yr, It has  own Musical and public adress system I believe UNAA can learn something from FOPCA.

Ndugu Kabukuru,

Registration for San Diego Early Bird is now open.

$150 for UNAA Members

$180 for Non-UNAA Members

There's absolutely no reason why UNAA delegates should complain about high registration fees come August 31st, 2014 at the Sheraton in San Diego.

If as a people we can develop a culture of doing things early, I think that will go a long way in solving many problems, e.g, delegates looking for registration people to pay to enter the dinner when the volunteers are already inside the ballroom.

We've one year to San Diego, yes the UNAA leadership needs to change something things, but we as members also have a lot to change.

Doing things at the last minute, when registration is $300 as opposed on the ongoing $150 for UNAA Members is one of those things we need to change.

Collectively, lets do better.

Tim,
Mr. Mulondo and his wife saved the day! Much thanks to them! Thats what we do in Cali! lol! We need more such men and women. However, we can not organize conventions by simply depending on very good Samaritans among us especially when we are charging "high fees"! A convention such as UNAA's can and should not be handled as a potluck dinner!

As for a flat fee this is a more complicated area and I am not saying I have all the answers but with better fiscal responsibility (I.e having hired hands mixed in with volunteers ( very well vetted volunteers) then I see the possibility!

Most of us appreciate  all who have volunteered  for UNAA selflessly! At the same time we need to watch out for those volunteers who will perform duties of critical importance as they see fit just because they are volunteering!!!!

Cheers

David,

There is a gentleman known as Walter Mulondo who is also from California. He noticed that we were very tight on resources and rather than stand on the sidelines and offer even more advice on what the few volunteers should do and how they should do it, he rolled up his sleeves and together with his wife volunteered much needed help with the convention. He even got into his car and drove out several miles all over Dallas and for several hours shopping for a few odd things needed for the UNAA. convention. He paid full price for the convention for himself and his family and for their room. He did not ask for anything in return. I for one would never describe these folks as "self serving volunteers". I would rather thank them for their service and make an appeal because I think UNAA needs even more volunteers like this.

On another point you said that rather the set unrealistic expectations with time keeping etc, we should rather manage situations since we understand our culture and know what to expect. Then you went ahead and wondered why we have increasing registration fees. David, it is to do precisely what you just advised UNAA to do - to manage our cultural norms. There is empirical data which very clearly shows that our people will pay ONLY when there is a deadline, e.g the price is going to increase or worse the convention is starting. Indeed the graph shows spikes which directly correlate to rate change deadlines. This pattern is very well documented and has been happening every year. So if we put one nice flat fee as you are asking, guess what will happen? Even more folks will start paying in August 2014 or in San Diego. Ten you have 3 big problems. You cannot make any down payments to confirm the convention, then cannot even plan because you don't know if the convention is happening and when you suddenly see folks arriving at the hotel you will need more volunteers to be cashiers in San Diego.

My two cents
