Brig Kasirye Gwanga says he can only support Muhoozi without Museveni's help
Speaking to The Observer on Friday, Gwanga said although he and exiled Gen David Sejusa have been outspoken against a "Muhoozi project" which government and the army have severally denied, he was not a hardliner like Sejusa.
"I, however, differ with Sejusa because I met President Museveni and we talked about Muhoozi and I told him face to face that I can only support this young boy and look for votes for him, if he does not come with your [Museveni] support because I and him both graduated from Sandhurst," Gwanga said.
Until now the few public figures who have dared to speak on the so-called Muhoozi project have either denied its existence or argued that nothing in the law prevents him from standing for president.
Sejusa, on the other hand, has been in the spotlight since April, after he penned a dossier, in which he demanded an investigation into a rumoured plot to kill top army and government officials opposed to the alleged presidential ambitions of Brig Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Muhoozi is President Museveni's son and the head of the elite Special Forces Command. It also came to the fore recently that Gwanga's recent troubles with police over his occupancy of a house in Makindye were triggered by his outspokenness against a future Muhoozi presidency.
Responding to reports that he was one of the state witnesses lined up to pin Gen Sejusa in an impending treason trial against the renegade general, Gwanga said:
"I'm not trying to defend Sejusa but the way you journalists are using my name and that of Sejusa means your aim is to sell your papers without facts. Can you believe that today (Friday) Red Pepper came up with a lead story that I will pin Sejusa when he is court marshaled. I testify against Sejusa on what and why?" he said.
"As far as I'm concerned, according to Sejusa's documents released in the media, he has not announced any war against this government. According to what I recall, Sejusa wrote to ISO boss asking him to investigate claims of a plot to kill top government officials opposed to Muhoozi. To me, he was entitled to make such a demand because he was the coordinator of intelligence services," Gwanga said.
