The leader of the ruling party, President Museveni, received the defectors yesterday at his country home in Rwakitura, Kiruhura district.

"Thank you for returning home," the President told them.

The former opposition members were led by the Deputy RDC Rukungiri district, Ms Harriet Nakamya.

This comes against the backdrop of a battle for political superiority in Rukungiri, the home district of opposition strongman, Dr Kizza Besigye, during the 51st Independence celebrations on October 9.

Besigye walked out of the ceremony, saying the event had turned partisan.

Earlier, government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo, said the people of Rukungiri requested to host the function to recommit their faith in NRM.

The impact of the defection remains unclear.

However, NRM has in recent years used such incidents to demoralise the opposition supporters and woo more defectors.

It is equally important to note that NRM has in recent months lost the support of former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya and also Coordinator of Intelligence Organs Gen David Sejusa.

The duo has vowed to challenge Museveni's hold on power.

According to a statement from State House, "President Museveni welcomed the group to NRM and told them that NRM is a Movement that stands on 4 pillars that include: non sectarianism; nationalism; pan-Africanism as well as social and economic transformation.

The President informed them that he started his campaign of transforming the population in his early school days in the 60s' by telling chiefs to teach people to change and the effort has bore fruits.

"I started the campaign in 1966. I used to tell chiefs to teach others that if anybody is taught, that person can change from darkness to light," he said.

On their concerns about the Banana wilt, President Museveni reminded them that he held seminars in all Banana growing zones in the country, attended by leaders at all levels to sensitize wanainchi on how to stem the disease. He therefore called on leaders and agricultural experts to help the population in this regard.

President Museveni later pledged to assist women and the boda-boda groups among others in their economic activities. The President also assured the people of Rukungiri that the district hospital will be built.
