Kampala- Former Operation Wembley Chief, Elly Kayanja has told court that his nephew tried to kill him by lacing his food with poison.
Testifying before Buganda Road Court Chief magistrate, Olive Kazaarwe, the senior army officer said yesterday he derives his suspicion from what police told him after he blacked out.
He said while he had gone to the US for treatment, a police detective investigating the case rang him to inform him that his nephew, Mr Alex Ssekitto, was behind the plot to kill him.
Brig Kayanja, however, failed to tell court the kind of poison that was administered. He further told court that he took care of Ssekitto since he was two-years-old and entrusted him with all his businesses when he grew up.
"The only complaint I had about Ssekitto previously, was about misuse of my money until police told me he attempted to eliminate me through poisoning," Brig Kayanja said.
When Ssekitto's lawyer, Mr Brian Sserunjogi asked Brig Kayanja why he insists that it is his nephew who poisoned him yet it is his wife, Sidona Mbabazi, who prescribed Dynapharm food supplements which smelled like paraffin, he said, "she had never indicated that she can poison me."
Trial magistrate, Ms Kazaarwe adjourned the matter to November 29, for further hearing.
Prosecution led by State Attorney, Ms Peace Biira, alleges that on January 15, Mr Sekitto and others still at large, while at Mutundwe, Rubaga Division in Kampala, attempted to cause the death of his uncle Brig Kayanja by poisoning.
According a police statement, Mr Sekitto allegedly confessed to having connived with his aunt, Ms Mbabazi (Brig Kayanja's wife) and hatched a plot to eliminate the brigadier by lancing his food with rat poison.
The police statement quotes Mr Sekitto saying Ms Mbabazi's "hatred" for the husband stemmed from financial misunderstandings the couple was embroiled in.
