Ugandan In UK Found Guilty Of Murder, Faces Life Sentence

Ugandan Allan Kalema, 19, became the sixth man to appear at the Old Bailey, London for his involvement in the killing of Andrew Jaipaul in north London in 2011. He was convicted of murdering Jaipul and faces a possible life sentence at a court hearing on Friday.

The deceased Mr Jaipaul, 21, was killed in what London's Metropolitan Police described as a "brutal murder" by rival gang members, who were associates of Kalema – living in Cardinal's Way, London, before the trial.

Mr Jaipaul was chased by a mob of approximately 30 people carrying knives and broken glass. He was stabbed 25 times.

In a statement issued by the victim's family, his mother Joanna Jaipaul said: "He was a loving and loved son, brother and a loyal friend to many.

"It is very difficult to put into words the enormous loss and grief that the family feel. That grief is totally overwhelming."

Kalema was the sixth person to be convicted of the killing, joining Tirrell Ball-Thomas, 20, Tommy McInerny, 21, Jojo Mafwa, 20, and two teenagers aged 15 and 18, who all are currently serving life sentences.

Another man, Tony Walker, was acquitted of murder but found guilty of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

Although there was no forensic evidence linking anyone to the attack, detectives identified members of the gang by analysing CCTV footage and eyewitness evidence.

The two men will be sentenced at the Old Bailey tomorrow.
