Opposition, NRM MPs denounce impeachment

Parliament- Lawmakers from across the political spectrum yesterday denounced the controversial impeachment of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
The MPs accused the government of targeting democratically-elected opposition leaders in the country.

They said Mr Lukwago's removal tantamounts to overthrow of the 1995 Constitution since he was democratically elected by the people of Uganda through a legal process.

"This is treason for the government of the NRM regime and it's tantamount to overthrow of the Constitution by removing leaders elected by the people in a kangaroo and treacherous process," said the Serere district woman MP Alice Alaso.

"The NRM disregarded the judicial intervention by way of a court order which has been disregarded and torn in the presence of Kampala Minister. It is now up to the people of Uganda to defend the 1995 Constitution; it's not a Lukwago matter anymore."

Stephen Ochola (FDC, Serere County) said: "This is not coming as a surprise. The KCCA Act which the NRM brought is inadequate and the NRM was determined to put the Lord Mayor out of Kampala. He has been thrown out using undemocratic means. It's high time Ugandans woke up to fight for this country."

Mr Ssebuliba Mutumba, the Kawempe South MP said: "It is a sad day in the history of this country to see the rule of law being trashed. The plot is of course led by President Museveni who has allowed thugs to do the thuggery in an institution like KCCA in disregard of the court order.

"The mayor is supposed to be given due diligence and heard and you cannot run away from justice for the decision shall have ramifications for the country."
