The quirky design for Qatar's first 2022 World Cup stadium is making FIFA bosses blush because it looks like a vagina.

The proposed Al-Wakrah stadium is supposed to resemble the sails of a dhow boat traditionally used for pearl fishing.

But now people have taken to social network Twitter in force to point out the embarrassing mistake.

The state-of-the-art stadium will hold 40,000 people and should be ready by 2018, according to reports.

Aecom, the firm in charge of the Al Wakrah contract along with Zaha Hadid Architects, said: "Inspired by the dhow boat that carried generations of local fishermen and pearl divers, the stadium weaves together Qatar's past with its progressive vision for the future.

"Sustainable materials and practices will be used throughout the stadium and the pitch and spectator stands will be cooled to a perfect temperature for football.

"Al Wakrah Stadium is truly the start of something amazing."

According to Reuters, it is the first of six stadiums and Qatar plans to spend $140 billion on them all plus a rail system, a new airport, a seaport, and hundreds of kilometers of new roads.

Whether any of them will be shaped like phallic objects remains to be seen but the stadium design is just one of a collection of embarrassingly shaped buildings across the world.
