Only a day after Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly was put under a direct spotlight, eventually taking over several duties for Rob Ford, he met with city staff Tuesday morning to start a transition process.
Council has voted in favour of giving Kelly reining powers during civic emergencies, while also approving a move that gives his office a large majority of Ford’s office budget, including staff.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon, Kelly announced that 11 of the Mayor’s staffers would be coming under his supervision, including two high profile names, Earl Provost and Sheila Paxton.
Provost, until today, was Rob Ford’s chief of Staff.
The area known as the fishbowl, where most of the staff members sit, is having locks changed, with access to the Mayor to be determined by Norm Kelly; The glass has also been frosted over.
Following the removal of certain powers from Mayor Ford, Norm Kelly says he wants to “proceed quickly in a go-forward position”, while sticking to Ford’s agenda of fiscal conservatism.
Kelly says in the days to come, that direction will be “more cooperative” and be in a “more sensitive to the arguments and positions of others”.
