December 2, 2013 | WORLDWIDE American priest elected bishop for New Westminster diocese An American priest who describes herself as a "Canadian enthusiast" has been elected the first woman bishop in the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster and the first woman diocesan bishop in the ecclesiastical Province of British Columbia and the Yukon. The Rev. Canon Melissa M. Skelton, canon for congregational development and leadership and rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Seattle, in the Diocese of Olympia, was elected by a special synod on Nov. 30, in Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver. She succeeds Bishop Michael Ingham, who retired last August. A Hunger Games Eucharist in the Diefenbunker About 130 young people gathered in a heavily fortified bank vault in the depths of the "Diefenbunker" near Carp, Ontario, on Nov. 17, 2013. They were there for a Eucharist and sermon comparing the pacifism of Christ and the "redemptive violence" of the bestselling novel and movie The Hunger Games. The once-secret underground bunker near Carp was built more than 50 years ago to protect the Canadian government from nuclear attack.
