I know the name Olara Otunnu stirs mixed emotions here, but I hope we'll find enough ground today to console Mr. Otunnu and his family at this trying time.

Mama Josephine Amato married into a political family, and she never disappointed: her sons have remained true to their father's calling for public service.

Family agreed UPC party president Olara Otunnu would release details of the death of his mother to the public.

The mother of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) party president, Olara Otunnu has died in London, New Vision has learnt.

Family and party sources in Kitgum say Josephine Amato passed away on Sunday in the UK where she had for a time lived in exile.

The sources could not readily provide details on her death.

A family source told New Vision on Thursday that they had agreed as a family that her son, Olara Otunnu, would be the one to pass on the details to the public.

It is not clear when the UPC politician will release the information though.

A party official who did not want to be named said the news of the death of their leader's mother was released to party leaders by UPC's administrative secretary at the party headquarters in Kampala.

New Vision understands that the family is still divided on where Amato should be buried.

Otunnu, who is presently said to be on an official tour to Amuru district, wants his mother's remains to be flown back to Uganda.

But his brothers – Omara Otunnu, a lecturer at an American university and another living in London – reportedly insist that their mother be buried temporarily in London, and be reburied in Uganda at a later time.

Their father, Yusto Otunnu, who died aged 76 on April 12, 1998, is buried in Oxford in the UK.

A former UPC president, he married Amato in 1948 and they sired 13 children together.

Sources say there is a tentative plan to bury her within the first two weeks of January at a place yet to be determined.
