Two officials of South Africa's ruling party have handed in resignations following the phony interpreter incident at patriarch Nelson Mandela's memorial in December, the Associated Press reports.

According to the AP, the officials, Bantubahle Xozwa – who allegedly owns the company that hired the fake interpreter and was the head of the African National Congress' religious, and traditional affairs desk – and his wife Cikizwa, who was the personal assistant to a spokesman for the party, handed in their resignations after the incident with no explanation.

"No reasons were given," another party spokesman, Keith Khoza told the South African Press Association, according to the AP. "They just submitted their resignation letter. It happened in December after the incident."

Xozwa claimed that Thamsanqa Jantjie, the allegedly schizophrenic 'fake' translator, was not working for the company at the service inside the stadium, where he stood next to some of the world's most powerful leaders flailing his hands in what actual interpreters considered a bogus attempt at sign language. Jantjie claims that he had a schizophrenic episode during the service and began hallucinating making it difficult to keep focused.
