{UAH} UGANDANS STRANDED IN KUWAIT

Statement by Dr Ssemuddu Rashid the Uganda Ambassador to Riyadh, accredited to Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrein, Oman, Yemen, Jordan and Permanent representative to OIC over the Ugandan citizens who are held in Kuwait.

There are Nineteen Ugandans working on a farm in Kuwait who laid down their tools after 2 of their colleagues were arrested at Police by owner of the farm they were working on.

The farm is owned by a one Mr Fazil

Mohammed. The Ugandans claim that they were mistreated by the farm owner who made them work for long hours in very bad conditions and also harassed and threatened them with violence. The farm owner retained their travel documents and has refused to surrender them. The arrested gentlemen are Hassan Kavuma and Abbas Kiggundu. One Ugandan remained at the farm.

As of today, the Nineteen are in Kuwait City and are being helped by good Samaritans for food and shelter. And my staff at the headquarters in Riyadh called: Mr Mulekezi Daniel is in touch with them through their team leader Kamya Bonny.

And we have made contact with

authorities in Kuwait and also friendly Missions and Non Government Organisations to address their current predicament. The Embassy will stop at nothing to help these Ugandans, Inshallah.

And we have been informed that The guys are going to surrender to Police for tonite.

I urge the ministry of labour jointly with Foreign affairs and all government agencies to work together in stopping such practices of non organized labour export which leads our people to problems till the bilaterals agreements are signed between our government and all those other countries which import our labour.

Regards

Amb. Dr. Sheikh- Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu.
