Journalist dies after fighting in DR Congo

* Prensa Latina reported that journalist died after a Congolese military offensive against Ugandan rebels in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), confirmed government sources quoted by local media.

"We regret to report the death in the morning (Sunday) of journalist Germain Muliwavyo Kennedy, Radio Tele Muungano victim of a gunshot wound to the head," he said in a statement the government spokesman Lambert Mende.

The reporter covering the operation of the Armed Forces of the DRC against the Allied Democratic Army-National Forces for the Liberation of Uganda (ADF-NALU), "was with two of his colleagues on board a military vehicle that was attacked" says the note.

It states that the assault took place in the territory of Beni, north of North Kivu province, and two journalists who accompanied Kennedy remain safe.

With the support of the UN Mission for Stabilization in the DRC (MONUSCO), Kinshasa launched in mid-January last military offensive against the ADF-NALU.

According to reports of staff, from the start of the operation 22 Congolese soldiers have been killed and 230 Ugandan rebels.

The ADF, which emerged in the 1990s in opposition to the Ugandan government, joined with the NALU.

In mid-2000, these armies were expelled from Uganda, but remained on Congolese territory, where they increased their attacks in 2013.

Recently the ADF-NALU were accused of assaults and kidnappings around Beni, including the deaths of at least 60 civilians in two attacks last December.

The Ugandan group has been identified by UN missions as one of the main obstacles to peace in the region.
