The Mandya police said they are waiting for the postmortem and FSL reports to ascertain the cause of a Rwandan student’s death a week ago.

The deceased was identified as Elisaphan Tugirimana (24) from Kigali in Rwanda. Tugirimana was a third-year BSc computer science student from Brindavan College in Bangalore. He allegedly drowned in the backwaters of Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) dam on February 11.

Tugirimana along with three friends went on a picnic to KRS dam in Srirangapatna taluk. The police said as there was no response to the advertisement published in the media for a week and the body was buried after all formalities.

High Commissioner of Rwanda Ernest Rwamucyo along with counsel for Rwanda Mohan Suresh will visit Mandya on Wednesday around 9 am.

“There are 400 Rwandan students in Bangalore.  We will speak to SP Bhushan G Borase and the local inspector to find out more about the incident,” Suresh said said.

Borase told Express that the postmortem conducted by the KR Hospital did not clearly reveal the cause of the death. “According to prima facie evidence, there was no external injuries on the body. We are ascertaining that there are chances of the students being drunk before venturing into the river for swim,” he said.

Bhushan said the three students when questioned said they were together when they went to KRS backwaters. But later they left the place but Tugirimana stayed back. When Tugirimana did not turn up, they tried tracing him. Bhushan said their not registering any missing complaint in the police station has given rise to suspicions.
