Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) Works With Nokia Corp (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) And Airtel To Launch ‘SocialEDU’ in Rwanda

On Feb 24,Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) announced starting a new program as part of its Internet.org project.

The social media website has today introduced a pilot initiative called SocialEDU which aims at providing education to the students in Rwanda. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) wants to bring a mutual online education in the nation. The program seeks to provide students with free of cost, high quality localized educational substance. The program would create a social learning experience because it will be accessed via handheld devices. The company said that the program is a next step after the success of MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses which had made access to high quality educational material affordable.

Facebook’s partners

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has worked with the Rwandan government, a telecom company, a device producer and an educational substance provider to materialize the project, said the company. Nokia Corp (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) will be providing support for hardware while Airtel will be the local carrier which will provide data subsidy. The company is availing the funding logistics from the Rwandan government.

The educational classes will come from edX which is a consortium of universities such as the University of Tokyo, Harvard and MIT. The program will provide the access to the study material via an application Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) will be designing. The application will deliver high speed meaningful education to the participants of the program. The app will be integrated into Facebook. Clearly, this would require Rwandans to sign up for the social networking site to access these classes.

Doubts

A matter of concern popping up is the scope of the project which is quite unclear and shortsighted with Airtel’s free data offer expiring after only a period of one year. Nevertheless, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) describes the project a pilot program, which shows it, plans to launch similar programs in other countries sometime in the future.
