 Gwokto,

I am not in a good mood today, actually it is a black sunday as I have been reminded that my status is now that of granpa as you can see below from my niece's Facebook message. I am still very reluctant to accept this new enhanced status as I consider myself to still be very much in the market. When my 19 year old son stands next to me, people often mistake him to be my younger brother as he is an almost exact replica of myself.

To complete my misery, my Acholi friend who came to the UK at the same time as myself dropped a bombshell. He came with a 5 year old boy. The whole of his family was wiped out in Namukora, I think in 1987- his wife and 2 young children- I don't know if you still remember the killings in Namukora, one of the worst atrocities Museveni committed against Acholi people. So this guy was a single parent through-out looking after his boy. We became very close in fact since I also soon became a single parent when my Nigerian wife left me with two children. A month ago my friend told me his son, who studied well and qualified as a lawyer, has met a white woman that he plans to marry. So yesterday he came to me with advanced plans for the wedding. He plans to bring over some of the old folks from Namukora, but he has asked me to be the master of ceremonies. Of course I am very happy to play the role- but I am again reminded now about this new role of granpa- I am an "elder" chosen to preside over a wedding of a boy not long ago I was carrying on my laps. Next weekend, we are going to have the first of a series of planning meetings, and I have chosen to give these two songs below by Opio Tongweno and Dr Phoebe Abe to the bride to prepare her for being an Acholi wife. I have found both of the songs very moving and educative. If my Nigerian ex-wife had listened to these songs before we got married, perhaps she would still be my wife today. Just listen to Susannah's wedding and look at the ticks in the box she gets when it comes to the qualities expected of an Acholi wife, for eg knowing the route to the kitchen. I am trying to find one that outlines the duties of a good Acholi husband to give to the boy- drinking excessive alcohol should not be one of those qualities nor should womanising with cheap women.

I am very proud of this boy and his determination to succeed despite the tragedy he suffered in early life. I used to tell him and as well as my children that failure is not an option for them. I told them the biggest gift they could ever give back to us their parents is to give Museveni two fat  fingers, prove to him that they will suceed in life despite his evil deeds and intentions. Museveni's plan was to wipe off the Luo people and they the children have to prove to him that he has failed in that evil plan.

I am now looking around London to find a suitable and fitting Acholi traditional dress to wear on the day although this will only confirm my newly enhanced status, because I also want to carry a suitable walking stick. I can't turn back the clock now. If I have children now, which I am tempted to do, they will be agemates with my grandchildren. What a life!!!.
