Ugandans seen with T-72B1s in South Sudan

The most recent conflict in South Sudan, which has included Ugandan forces fighting on the side of the South Sudanese government, has revealed a new asset in the Ugandan arsenal: the T-72B1 Main Battle Tank.

Uganda, a well-known importer of tanks from Belarus and Ukraine, is likely to have acquired the T-72s from either of these countries to strengthen its existing force of T-55s, T-55AM2s, and T-55AMVs for use in peacekeeping missions.

Uganda also reportedly received 31 T-90Ss (the export version of the T-90A) in 2012. However, the presence of the T-72B1 is a strong indicator that this deal did not, in fact, take place - with the T-72s being delivered instead.
