{UAH} WHY DO LEADERS STAY IN POWER FOR TOO LONG?
Is it a legacy created by colonialism? In many cases in Africa, I believe that colonialism is responsible for what we see today (see ethnic divides, white savior complex, a skewed sense of self, etc). Do you think it is responsible for this insatiable need to remain in office forever?
Pre-colonial Africa was governed under Monarchies (Kingdoms and chiefdoms) and so the system of leaders staying in power till they die and be inherit by their heir apparent is not new. It was not invented by colonialists and in fact colonial masters who were governed under similar systems simply complemented what was already existing in Africa. With the introduction of democracy, the system of monarchies started fading and some African leaders looked at democracy as interference in African governance affairs. Therefore, some of these leaders are tracing the pre-colonial African roots and feel governing their countries like monarchies can work better. After all, some of their colonial masters are still governed under Monarchical systems. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE?
