EDMONTON - Friends and family of two Edmonton men who died during a knife attack in a west Edmonton warehouse Friday say they are devastated at the senseless killing.
Friends of Thierno Oumar Sadio Bah, 41, said the quiet man moved to Edmonton about six months ago from Montreal. The university-educated father was working at the Loblaw’s warehouse, but often said he hoped to find a better job to support his wife and four young children, who are between about two and six years old, friends said.
“He’s a very quiet person, a very nice guy, hard worker and was always smiling,” friend Amadou Barry said Saturday.
“I remember him as a nice person, a nice guy, who moved here because he wanted to build a better life in Edmonton.”
Barry said he was with Bah’s distraught wife, Djenaba Haidara, all evening Friday. After the attack Friday afternoon, she asked Barry to go to the warehouse and make sure her husband was OK.
“We went back to the house and I told her, yes, her husband died, but she said, ‘No.’ She wouldn’t believe me,” Barry said.
“His wife was telling me, ‘I can’t tell that to my kids.’ It’s so sad. I’m pretty sure the wife is not doing good. She didn’t eat all day yesterday.”
The couple was planning to move to a new apartment, and Bah’s wife had encouraged him to take Friday off work so the couple could go to sign the lease, Barry said.
“He said, ‘No, let me go to work and we can do it on Monday. That’s the last conversation they had.”
Bah was originally from Guinea, and friends and family are trying to figure out how to raise enough money to send his body back to the West African country where his mother and siblings still live, said friend Daouda Bah, who grew up with Thierno Bah.
The family is planning prayers Sunday afternoon and asking for financial donations so they can repatriate his body to Guinea, according to a post on a website for Edmonton’s Guinean community.
Thierno Bah was Muslim and relatives are trying to make arrangements for an Islamic funeral, Daouda Bah said.
“Right now, our priority is to get help for (his wife) and the kids, because she doesn’t work,” said Daouda Bah.
Fitzroy Harris, 50, was married and was a father and grandfather, said his daughter Patricia Harris, who has a brother in Jamaica and sister in the United States.
“He’ll be missed,” said Harris, 31.
In a written statement, Harris’s family said friends and relatives will remember Harris as a talented DJ with tremendous passion and knowledge about music.
“Music was his life, and reggae music was his soul.”
The statement said the family will never be the same and relatives expressed anger at Harris’s killer.
“Shame on you, coward ... May God not have mercy on your soul.”
