Just like humans, chimpanzees also prefer beds that are stable and comfortable, a new study by researchers from the University of Nevada and Indiana University revealed.

The researchers studied the qualities of seven varieties of tree species that chimpanzees prefer for their nests at Uganda's Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve. They also studied leaf surface area as well as shapes of the nests.

Out of the total 1,844 chimpanzees nests, nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) were found to be made of Ugandan Ironwood.

Chimpanzees' preference for a special variety of threes also revealed from the fact that Ugandan Ironwood is constitutes less than 10 per cent of all trees in the area.

Dr. David Samson from the University of Nevada and Dr. Kevin Hunt from Indiana University said chimpanzees prefer stable and comfortable beds to sleep.

Sharing the findings of the study, Dr. Samson said, "Chimpanzees, like humans, are highly selective when it comes to where they sleep.

This suggests that for apes there is something inherently attractive about a comfortable bed-down to what kind of wood you use to make it."

The branches of Ugandan Ironwood trees are known for their bending strength as well as stiffness. In addition, this variety has thick foliage and little leaves. These qualities make Ugandan Ironwood an ideal nesting place for chimpanzees.
