After taking too much, drinkers take a nap aimlessly on the ground. On average, every person in the world aged 15 years or older drinks 6.2 litres of pure alcohol per year. But as less than half the population (38.3 per cent) actually drinks alcohol, this means that those who do drink consume on average 17 litres of pure alcohol annually. PHOTOS | FILE

Dar es Salaam. Uganda is the undisputed leader in alcohol consumption by volume among the EAC member countries, a new report shows.

With a population of 34 million people, the volume of alcohol consumed in Uganda would equal 23.7 litres per person every year.

It is followed in second place by Rwanda (11 million) and Burundi (9.2 million) who tied at 22 litres of alcohol per person, according to the 2014 Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health.

The report by WHO, shows Tanzania (45 million) and Kenya (41million), as having the lowest volumes consumed at 18.4 litres and 18.9 litres respectively.

Uganda and Rwanda lead in the consumption of local brews, both with a significant 89 per cent of their consumption falling in this segment.

Tanzania has also a large share of its market controlled by the local brew at 87 per cent followed by Burundi at 75 per cent. Kenyans are shown as the least in preference of local brews with just 20 per cent of the market share.

However, Kenya where deaths from illicit liquor are common and claim the lives of scores every year, appears by far to be the heaviest drinkers, more than doubling the volume of beer drunk by their regional peers. Kenya's share of the beer market was 56 per cent followed by Burundi with 25 per cent.

Tanzania and Rwanda with 11 per cent of the beer market while Uganda was the least in beer consumption at just 9 per cent.

Kenya still took a huge lead in the spirits segment with 22 per cent while all the other countries here had between one and two per cent of the spirit share.

Wine seems to be the least preferred alcoholic drink in all the EAC countries with a market share of just two per cent in Kenya and one per cent in the rest of the countries.

Globally, Europe is the region with the highest consumption of alcohol per capita, with some of its countries having particularly high consumption rates.

Trend analysis shows that the consumption level is stable over the last 5 years in the region, as well as in Africa and the Americas, though increases have been reported in the South-East Asia and the Western Pacific regions
