Luweero By-Election: Nabukenya Petitions EC

There was commotion at the Electoral Commission tally center at Luweero district this afternoon after Brenda Nabukenya, the DP candidate stormed the center with her supporters to file a petition hours into the polls.

They besieged the tally center seeking redress over alleged gross irregularities that include missing names on the registers, intimidation, forged voter receipts and delayed voting at some polling stations.

Nabukenya and her team handed over the petition to Alex Komuhangi, the Luweero returning officer who received it in the presence of Joseph Biribonwa, the electoral commission vice chairperson.

Komuhangi acknowledged receipt but declined to stamp it drawing angry reactions from Nabukenya and her team. Imamu Makumbi, the Democratic Party Vice Chairperson for Western rejected the acknowledgement saying it is null and void since its lack the electoral commission.

Komuhangi insisted that there was no need for the stamp. Betty Nambooze, the Mukono Municipality would have any of this. He blasted Komuhangi accusing her of incompetence.

Nambooze also pinned Komuhangi of being NRM supporter and former aide to Minister Bright Rwamirama saying she can't be independent.

The duo engaged in a verbal exchange of words before Komuhangi stormed out of the office leaving Nabukenya and her agents stranded.

It took the intervention Jotham Taremwa, the Electoral Commission Spokesperson and other EC officials to counsel Komuhangi to return to the desk and stamp the letter.

Komuhangi says that she was tired of being insulted by opposition leaders and dishonesty because some issues they are raising had earlier on been addressed.

Nabukenya insists that many names of her had disappeared on the register and want Electoral Commission to address the matter with immediate effect.

Isma Kavuma and Jenipher Nakyeyune from Kakoolo polling stations are some of the voters whose names are missing on the register. The duo claims that their names were deleted on the grounds that they were dead.

Jotham Taremwa, the Electoral Commission Spokesperson regretted the conduct of the returning officer but said the issues raised by Nabukenya are being addressed.

Four candidates are vying to fill up the vacant Luweero district woman MP seat. They are Brenda Nabukenya, NRM's Rebecca Balwana Nalwanga and two independents Ramla Kadala and Farida Namubiru.

The seat fell vacant after the appellate Court ruled on that the process which took Nabukenya to parliament saying it was none compliant with the law.
