Maternal deaths soar in Elgon area

The maternal mortality rate in Mt Elgon area has soared, according to health reports from the five districts that make up the sub-region.

The Mbale District health officer, Mr JB Waniaye, said the mortality rates in Bududa, Manafwa, Sironko, Bulambuli and Mbale districts have gone up due to pregnant mothers’ ignorance of availability of antenatal services at each health centre in their sub–counties.

“Mbale alone has maternal mortality rate of 680 per 100,000 live births and about 78 per cent of these deaths are reported in rural areas most of which are hard to reach,” Dr Waniaye said.

He was officiating at the opening of a 20-bed maternity ward at Buwangwa health centre III in Busano Sub-county, Mbale last weekend. He said child mortality rate is currently at 87 per cent which is 25 per cent higher than the national average of 62 per cent.

He attributed the high rates to pregnant mothers using traditional birth attendants who are not technically equipped to handle antenatal cases.
