Kenyan Presidential Guard acquires Achleitner Survivor tactical APC
Written by Oscar Nkala/defenceWeb, Thursday, 05 June 2014
The APC was photographed on Sunday at the Nyayo Stadium where Kenyatta officiated over the commemoration of the 52nd anniversary of the country's independence from Britain in 1963. The president arrived at the stadium in a new armoured ceremonial Toyota Land Cruiser with an elevated review platform. He was preceded by the Survivor APC.
Kenya's The Star reports the Survivor was purchased in late March or early April for the Presidential Guard.
Built by Austrian defence equipment manufacturer Franz Achleitner, the Survivor can be used for general security roles by the police, military and other paramilitary forces.
The Survivor is a 4-wheel drive vehicle powered by a 286 hp V8 engine giving a cruising speed of 110 km/h and a range of more than 800 kilometres. It has been designed to provide protection against ballistic threats (up to Stanag Level 3), mines (up to Stanag Level 2) and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Presidential Guard
Defence analysts in Kenya say the acquisition of a highly armoured VIP protection transport for President Kenyatta may be motivated by fears that his personal security is under threat from Somalia's Islamic militant group Al Shabaab which has stepped up operations in Kenya and claimed responsibility for a series of recent bombings in the capital Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa.
The Star reports that the Presidential motorcade has also acquired two armoured Mercedes Benz Pullman S600 limousines.
