{UAH} The Amsterdam conference
I have just read an article posted in The London Evening Post about the Amsterdam conference which was addressed by former opposition leader Dr. Kiiza Besigye. For the first time I have learnt that the conference was organized by the Uganda Diaspora Europe (EDE) based in Amsterdam on the theme of "Unity and Cohesion in Diaspora in Relation to Good governance and Development in Uganda". The article was written by Dradenya Amazia.
There are several issues to underscore. If the sole purpose of the meeting was to unite Ugandans in the Diaspora, then why were some active organizations like UDU and THP (The Hague Process) not invited? At its second meeting in June 2014 THP adopted a roadmap, strategy and methodology with 198 means of unseating NRM regime by civil disobedience. We are glad that Dr. Kiiza Besigye supported THP by emphasizing civil disobedience which means the same thing as non-violent resistance.
What we need to know is how the Amsterdam outcome regarding peaceful dissent will dovetail with the THP program. THP should provide the framework unless UDE has a better alternative.
It is also gratifying that on the basis of the information we have received some of the organizers of the Amsterdam meeting are same that organized The Hague conference. The leaders of UDE should therefore get in touch with Dr. Henry Gombya, the current chairperson of THP to work out a strategy on the way forward to advance unity and cohesion in the Diaspora and then collaborate with compatriots in the opposition at home.
It is also important to note that UDU has developed a National Recovery Plan (NRP) that has received support among Ugandans and development partners. This Plan should form the basis for post-NRM government. The Plan is accessible at www.udugandans.org.
Notwithstanding, in order to clear the air for all concerned, we would like to know who participated, the criteria for selection of participants, who covered the expenses, the purpose of the conference and the outcomes of the conference. In a democracy that we are striving for, transparency, participation and accountability are vital. We are glad this point was captured in the theme of the conference. Let us practice and share what we preach.
UDU and THP are ready and willing to cooperate with EDE on a level playing field.
Eric.
